Theatre and live performances have always topped film and television in my books. Raw live entertainment is what I call true art. The performer has only one shot at impressing the audience and this takes some serious talent and practice!
It was no surprise when I first saw Amos Forme Malungane perform during a talent show at an Activate Leadership camp held at the Alpha Conference Centre in Magaliesburg that I immediately developed a whole lot of respect for him.
He is a polished poet and performer who has the ability to grab the attention of an audience by simply showing up on stage with his “classic madala” look.
The respect developed even more when I learnt that he actually takes out time twice a week every week to direct an art group made up of school kids from his home township of Etwatwa in the East Rand.
With the high rate of youth drug use and crime in our townships, an extramural activity like this one keeps these kids off the streets.
The name of this group is Rearabilwe Theatre Productions and just like the meaning of its name, it has truly blessed Etwatwa with its talent.
Who is this Amos?
“My name is Amos Forme Malungane, a very energetic young man who believes that everyone is an artist. I can groom and make people explore talents within themselves that they have never explored before. The ability to make people listen to you is an art, which then makes you an artist,” he said very confidently as his opening statement during our interview.
“After completion of matric in 2014, I joined Love Life as a Groundbreaker and studied generic management at Love Life Leadership Academy. I’m currently working at Rearabilwe Ekurhuleni Community Care Center as a social caregiver and monitor. We give support to orphans, vulnerable children and those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS. We give out food parcels to them and even have a support group where they can talk about their problems.”
He is planning to study Education at Unisa next year in order to fulfill his life dream of becoming a professional educator.
So, how did the idea of an art group spring about?
“The group started in 2012. I, together with some colleagues at Rearabilwe Community Care Center, decided to form this group to keep us entertained during meetings. It then grew to what it is today.”
This group has won various titles for their poetry and plays in competitions all over Gauteng and Mpumalanga under the direction of Amos Forme Malungane.
Did I mention that he is only 21?
That’s a life lived with purpose right here. A soul that lives to drive change in society.
He is constantly performing at various events under the group’s name and in his personal capacity as well.
To see where he will be performing, or just to simply see his to-die-for fashion sense, you can get hold of him on Facebook using the profile name Amos forme, on Twitter @malunganeamosforme and Instagram as Amos Forme.
If you would like to collaborate with him, call/SMS him on 0823825261 or send a WhatsApp text to 0630505928.
From me, Morwedi ‘a Hlabirwa, it’s never too early or too late to live your purpose.
